Mr. John L. "Jay" Quinn, 79, of Mercersburg, Pa., died Saturday afternoon Sept. 15, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family.

Born Nov. 24, 1932, in Boston, Mass., he was a son of the late John L. and Beatrice Lanen Quinn. Mr. Quinn was a 1950 graduate of Monsignor Coyle High School, Taunton, Mass. He graduated from Boston University and engaged in graduate studies there as well as at Harvard University.

He joined the science faculty at Mercersburg Academy in 1961 as a chemistry teacher and served in that capacity until 1989. Mr. Quinn touched many lives as a teacher, dorm master and adviser at the school. During his time at the Academy, he was also director of Stony Batter Players, alumni secretary from 1980 to 1988, and editor of Mercersburg Magazine from 1982 to 1989. Mr. Quinn was also awarded honorary alumni status in the Mercersburg Class of 1947.

Mr. Quinn entered his first retirement from the Academy in 1989 to open an antique shop, "The Flying Cloud," on Main Street in downtown Mercersburg. He returned to Mercersburg as Director of Development and Alumni Affairs in 1991, a position he held until 1998, when he entered his second retirement. In 2002, Mr. Quinn was coaxed back to Mercersburg to serve as the Mercersburg Academy archivist, a part-time position he held until his death.

Mr. Quinn was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Korea from 1955 to 1957. Mr. Quinn was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church of Mercersburg. He served on the board of directors of the Fendrick Library and was instrumental in helping raise funds for the recent addition to the library. He was a member and past president of the Mercersburg Historical Society, and volunteered for Meals on Wheels.

His wife, Joan Unsworth Quinn, predeceased him on April 24, 1987. He is survived by his four children, Ruth M. Quinn and her husband, Thomas Chalkley, of Baltimore, Md.; Judith Q. and her husband, Christopher Sullivan, of Melrose, Mass.; John L. Quinn III and his wife, Roberta Peel, of Alexandria, Va.; and Ann E. Quinn and her husband, John Angel, of Baltimore, Md.; and 10 grandchildren, Olivia and Clare Chalkley, Christopher, Molly, and Rowan Sullivan, John IV and Owen Quinn, and Conor, Griffin and Isabel Angel. Mr. Quinn is also survived by a brother, Thomas Quinn, of New Bedford, Mass.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Sept. 22, 2012, at St. Luke's Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph L. Stahura officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg. There will be no viewing.
