Howard W. “Bill” Himes, 77, of Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., and formerly of Edgemont Road, Smithsburg, Md., passed away Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, at Meritus Medical Center.

Born March 6, 1935, at Edgemont, he was the son of the late Clifford G. and Mary G. (Kindle) Himes Sr.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the United States Navy.

Before retiring in 2000, he was the co-owner of H&H Printing of Smithsburg with his wife, Carol A. (Pepple) Himes, who preceded him in death March 19, 1998. Prior to owning his own business, he was employed by Hagerstown Bookbinding Co.

He was a life member of the Smithsburg Volunteer Fire Co., Smithsburg Emergency Medical Service, Blue Ridge Sportsman’s Association, member of South Mountain Rod & Gun Club, Cascade American Legion Post 239 and AARP.

He is survived by two daughters, Jackie L. Rice and husband, Kirk, of Middletown, Md., and Billie Jo Kemmerer and husband, Rick, of Leitersburg, Md.; one son, Jim W. Himes and his significant other, Debbie Plotner, of Smithsburg, Md,; grandchildren, Elizabeth Brewer and husband, Eric, Emily Rice, Hope Kemmerer and Jake Kemmerer; stepgrandson, Patrick J. Kemmerer and stepgranddaughter, Ashley Kemmerer; one sister, Jean C. Beaver of Smithsburg; one brother, Russell F. Himes of Hagerstown; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, William Lee Himes; three sisters, Louise Yingling, Margaret V. Guessford and Nancy E. Hays; and one brother, Clifford G. Himes Jr.

Services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, at 10 a.m. at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg, with the Rev. A. Paul Harne officiating. Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
