A 25-year-old man was arrested in connection with a fatal shooting a former Smithsburg man in August in the Mount Vernon neighborhood of Baltimore, police confirmed Saturday.

Quinton Bass, 25, of Raleigh, N.C., has been charged with killing Joseph Alexander “Alex Ulrich Jr., 40, and wounding Lawrence Peterson, 56, outside Peterson’s bed and breakfast on Aug. 10, according to Baltimore police and The Associated Press.

Police said officers approached a group of people on Aug. 31 who were drinking in a park, according to the AP.

Bass was in the group and police said he had a revolver with an obliterated serial number.

Bass was arrested, and an investigation led to the charge in the slaying.

Ulrich’s youngest brother, James Ulrich, told a Herald-Mail reporter last month that his brother had moved to Baltimore in April to start a new career as a photographer.

Police had said that Ulrich had said Ulrich was talking to some friends on the steps of a building in the first block of East Chase Street early on Aug. 10 when two people approached them and opened fire.

The shooting happened in a “well-to-do” area of the city, Baltimore Police Department spokesman Donny Moses said last month in an interview.

Ulrich was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital for multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. He was pronounced dead at 11 a.m.

Ulrich’s brother had said Baltimore police told his family that his brother was shot during a robbery.
