Police release names of drivers in Old National Pike crash

September 14, 2012

Maryland State Police have released the names of two people who were injured in a head-on collision Thursday on Old National Pike south of Funkstown.

Troopers said Richard Cosgrove of Waynesboro, Pa., was driving a 2005 Chevrolet TrailBlazer when he tried to pass another vehicle and collided head-on with a 2001 Ford Windstar being driven by Sharpsburg resident Joseph Churchey Jr.

Both drivers had to be freed from their vehicles.

Ashley Heaney said at the scene that the TrailBlazer passed her car on the shoulder of the roadway, then cut in front of her before driving into the oncoming lane of traffic.

The conditions of Churchey and Cosgrove were unavailable Friday.

The accident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. near a construction area where Poffenberger Road meets Old National Pike.
