The Hancock Fire Co. has an ongoing book sale on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the former Jim’s Game Room on Main Street, across from Susquehanna Bank. Proceeds will support the fire company.

Dance classes
A new session of dance classes began at the Hancock Community Center Sept. 7. Classes continue Friday and each Friday thereafter. Two sessions are offered, including East Coast swing and country two-step from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and foxtrot and waltz (American Social) from 8 to 9:30 p.m.  Each class costs $8 per person, $15 per couple, or both classes for $10 per person. No partner and no reservations are necessary.

Flag football
Saturday is the date for the third annual Hancock Panthers Alumni flag football game, sponsored by the Hancock High School Athletic Boosters. 
This year’s game is in Widmeyer Park. Registration starts at 9 a.m., with the game beginning at 9:30 a.m. 
A donation from each player will cover the cost of a souvenir T-shirt.  To register or for more information, call 301-302-3081. 
As a kickoff to homecoming week in town, the Boosters will sponsor a dance Saturday from 8 p.m. to midnight at the Hancock American Legion. Music will be provided by Fossil and Co. deejays.

Scarecrows of Hancock
Judging for the third annual Scarecrows of Hancock contest, sponsored by Hancock in Motion, takes place Saturday, Sept. 22, at Town Hall from 10 to 10:30 a.m. 
Participants are asked to bring a pre-assembled scarecrow to compete in various categories. There is no fee to enter.
 Entry forms are available at Town Hall and must be completed and returned by Sept. 19.

Magic show
Tickets are on sale for the magic show to be held Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Performing Arts Center in Town Hall. 
The following area magicians are scheduled to perform: Khan-Du and Company, Dean Burkett, The Magic of Michael T., Dale Rabon, and The Illusions of Frank Culler and Culler Magic with Jerry Mullinex as master of ceremonies. 
The show, sponsored by the Hancock Arts Council, will begin at 7 p.m. 
Refreshments will be served, and there will be a raffle of two magic kits. Tickets cost $8 each or $20 for a family of four. For tickets, call 301-678-5719.

Running event
The Joseph Hancock Park, on West Main Street, will be the starting point for the fifth annual running of the Western Maryland Half Marathon and 5K on Sunday, Sept. 23, to benefit Habitat for Humanity. 
Both races take place on the Western Maryland Rail Trail. 
Runners can sign up by downloading the registration forms online from the Habitat website at or can register at Walkers are welcome in the 5K.
