Md. 66 to close between Mount Aetna and Chewsville roads

September 12, 2012

Md. 66, also known as Mapleville Road, is scheduled to close Wednesday night at 9 p.m. between Mount Aetna and Chewsville roads for overnight maintenance work, Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) District Community Liaison Heather Keels said.

"We are replacing a drainage pipe under Md. 66 just north of the roundabout at Mount Aetna Road," Keels said.

A detour plan will be set up for motorists in each direction, according to Keels. Motorists heading northbound on Md. 66 can take Mount Aetna Road to Robinwood Drive to Jefferson Boulevard. Motorists heading southbound can take Chewsville Road, which becomes White Hall Road, to Jefferson Boulevard to Robinwood Drive to Mount Aetna Road, according to Keels.

Traffic on Interstate 70 heading to Smithsburg can use Exit 32 to U.S. 40, turn onto Edgewood Drive, which becomes Robinwood Drive, and eventually turn onto Jefferson Boulevard. Local passenger vehicles can also use Crystal Falls Drive, according to Keels.

The road is expected to reopen at 4 a.m. Thursday and is not scheduled to close again, according to Keels.

"It's possible that we may have some paving to finish (after the road opens), but that will be done during non-peak hours with flagmen directing traffic," Keels said. "Md. 66 will remain open."

SHA maintenance workers will be working on the project.
