Hospital demolished with environmental care

To the editor:

I am writing in regard to Tim Rowland’s column on Thursday, Sept. 6, commenting on the process for selection of a site for the new baseball stadium in Hagerstown. While everyone is entitled to his own sense of humor, I do feel that an individual with the ability to reach so many through the media also has a responsibility to convey accurate information.
Washington County Hospital and now, Meritus Medical Center, has responsibly served the healthcare needs of this region for more than 100 years. The demolition of the hospital was undertaken with the utmost concern for the safety, health and well-being of our neighbors.
Environmental concerns were addressed at every level, extensive precautions taken throughout the entire process, and appropriate third-party inspections and permits achieved. We strive to treat the community well, attending to individuals’ medical needs as well as helping them pursue healthy lifestyles.
We welcome a positive and appropriate selection of a new location for the baseball stadium, and will continue to partner with community groups, local advisors, and residents to ensure that the old hospital site is used in a manner that benefits this region for years to come.
