Telethon today raises money for 9/11 memorial in Pa.

ROUZERVILLE, Pa. — A telethon today at the site of a future Sept. 11, 2001, memorial will raise money to develop that memorial.

Held at Red Run Park, the telethon with live broadcasting from radio station WAYZ will have call-takers ready from about 5 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The original fundraising goal for the memorial was $110,000. However, in-kind donations of materials and labor are driving down the overall project cost.

Mainstreet group to take over running holiday parade

WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Mainstreet Waynesboro Inc. is taking over the running of the town’s annual Christmas parade, the Greater Waynesboro Chamber of Commerce announced Monday.

This year’s parade will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17.

“Although the chamber has enjoyed many years of organizing the annual holiday parade for the Waynesboro community, I am confident it can only get bigger and better under the Mainstreet leadership,” Greater Waynesboro Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Carlene Willhide said in a news release.

Mainstreet Waynesboro Inc. will now organize the parade and treelighting ceremony.

“We feel the parade not only kicks off a season of good will and joy, but also brings an economic development opportunity for the downtown,” said Patrick Fleagle, Mainstreet Waynesboro Inc.’s director of economic development.

The tree lighting will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, in Center Square. The event will include horse-drawn carriage rides, musical performances, hot chocolate and a six-foot candy cane from Zoe’s Chocolate Co.

Mainstreet Waynesboro Inc. is seeking sponsors for the tree lighting and parade.

For more information about becoming a sponsor or to take part in the annual parade, call Mainstreet Waynesboro Inc. at 717-762-0397 or visit www.mainstreetwaynesboro.org.
