Ronald J. Phillips, 91, of Smithsburg, Md., passed away Sept. 6, 2012.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Grace L. Phillips; and his children, Beverly Phillips Snyder of Middletown, Pa., and Gregory Phillips of Hagerstown, Md. Other family include son-in-law, Stephen Snyder; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Phillips; granddaughters, Abby Snyder Dunn, her husband, Micah, and sons, Wyatt and Everett of Hummelstown, Pa.; Lisa Snyder of Palmyra, Pa.; and Becca Snyder of Hershey, Pa.; and grandson, Tyler Phillips of Hagerstown.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen.

Born in Moosic, Pa., on Nov. 3, 1920, he was the son of Mark and Nellie Phillips. 

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska.

He worked for the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau for many years in Souderton, Pa., before moving to Maryland and working at Brook Lane Psychiatric Center, first in public relations and then as patient accounts manager. He retired in 1983 just prior to the birth of his first grandchild.


He was an active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Hagerstown for more than 40 years, until his health declined.

For many years, he and his wife were members of square and round dance clubs in the area. In his retirement years, he served with Meals on Wheels and the Red Cross bloodmobile, and doted on his grandchildren.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Hagerstown, on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012, at 11 a.m., with lunch following at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Washington County.
