A dump truck ran into the back of another dump truck on Sharpsburg Pike Monday afternoon, forcing authorities to close both lanes of the highway until crews could clean up dirt and stone dust that was spilled from the trucks, according to Maryland State Police.

Traffic was rerouted around the accident scene in the area of Wagaman Road while crews worked at the scene.

The accident was reported at 12:48 p.m. and one lane of Sharpsburg Pike remained closed at 2:30 p.m., as crews worked at the scene, according to a Washington County 911 dispatcher.

A southbound cement truck was waiting on Sharpsburg Pike to turn left onto Wagaman Road, said Trooper J.R. Bowers.

A dump truck also traveling south on Sharpsburg Pike could not get stopped in time and went into the northbound lane in an attempt to avoid hitting the cement truck, Bowers said.

The dump truck driver saw a car coming toward him in the northbound lane and went back into the southbound lane striking another dump truck that was waiting behind the cement truck, Bowers said.

An occupant of one of the dump trucks was taken to Meritus Medical Center with what appeared to be minor injuries, Bowers said.
