Shepherd bounces back from loss, beats American International

September 08, 2012

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — Kenny Williams and Mike Haynes ran for two touchdowns each, and Shepherd University put the sting of a first-week loss to Shippensburg behind it with a 34-7 victory over American International at Ram Stadium on Saturday.

American International (0-2) took a 7-0 lead when Kevin Arduino found Maurice Easterling with a 52-yard scoring pass with 10:47 left in the first quarter.

From there, the Rams (2-0) dominated the Yellow Jackets on the scoreboard.

Williams scored on a 1-yard run later in the first quarter and added a 12-yard score with 5:13 left in the second quarter. He finished with 52 yards on 20 carries.

Haynes’ 1-yard touchdown run gave Shepherd a 21-7 lead with 1:25 left in the first half. The Rams then forced a three-and-out to get the ball back one more time in the half, and quarterback Bobby Cooper hit Billy Brown with a 16-yard touchdown pass with 22 seconds left for a 28-7 halftime lead.

Haynes added a second 1-yard scoring run midway through the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.

Cooper finished 15-for-26 for 159 yards and the touchdown throw for the Rams.

Arduino went 14-for-27 for 211 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the Yellow Jackets.

The statistical battle was pretty close. Shepherd outgained American International 121-99 on the ground, while the Yellow Jackets had a 211-171 edge through the air and actually outgained the Rams 310-292 in total offense.

But American International turned the ball over twice and missed all three of its field goal attempts, while Shepherd did not commit a turnover.
