High School Football: Frederick holds off North

September 07, 2012

FREDERICK, Md. — A 33-yard touchdown run by Jerel English in the third quarter and a 3-yard score by Minase Shiferaw in the fourth gave the Frederick Cadets a 20-7 lead on the way to a 20-14 victory over North Hagerstown on Friday night.

Tre Anderson’s 5-yard score with about five minutes left in the fourth quarter got the Hubs (1-1) within a touchdown. North had a fourth-and-2 on the Frederick 20 with five seconds left, but a fumbled snap ended the game.

Sammy Degomez scored on a 13-yard run and Matt Hynes added a two-point conversion run to give the Cadets (2-0) an 8-0 lead in the first quarter.

Isaiah Keyes’ 2-yard score and Mark Grunberg’s extra point pulled the Hubs within a point early in the third quarter. Nicholas Karlen kept that drive alive with a 42-yard pass to Anderson on fourth-and-14.

Karlen completed 6 of 14 passes for 127 yards. Keyes had 59 yards rushing on nine carries, and Anderson added 35 yards on 12 carries.

English ran for 157 yards on 21 carries for the Cadets.
