Greene Township, Pa., fire damages duplex

Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal will be investigating the cause of the fire

September 04, 2012

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — A fire early Tuesday at 3016 Letterkenny Road in Greene Township, Pa., heavily damaged a duplex.

The 2:48 a.m. fire caused extensive damage to one side of the two-story duplex, and the other side sustained water and smoke damage, Franklin Fire Co. Assistant Chief Steve Himes said.

Fire spread through the heavy timber, balloon-style construction and shared attic, Himes said.

“It’s definitely not livable at this time,” he said.

Crews from about 12 fire departments hauled water down a long lane to reach the home. Firefighters remained on the scene until about 10 a.m. to ensure all the pockets of fire were eliminated, according to Himes.

One firefighter suffered minor heat exhaustion and was treated at the scene, Himes said.

A Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal will be investigating the cause of the fire, he said.

Himes said he was unsure whether the duplex had working smoke detectors.
