Mail Call - Aug. 31

August 30, 2012

“I was born in 1947, got a Social Security card, graduated from high school in 1964. Average grades, didn’t go to college; no money, low grades. Went to work in 1964, joined the army in 1969, fought in Vietnam. In 1973, got a steady job and worked 40 years ... Retired in 2012 with health problems. Can’t live alone, must have Social Security, which I paid in for in 45 years.”
— Halfway

“This is about the Social Security. The Social Security mess has been going on since Reagan. He was been trying to get rid of Social Security ever since he was in there, and that’s a fact. Every Republican president tried to do something with it, just like George Bush, trying to privatize it and lose it in the stock market. And to the person in Hancock, saying about freedom of speech: Where’s the people’s freedom of voting in this country, when Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Ohio and everybody is trying to suppress the votes from, Democrats from voting?”
— Washington County

“Now that we’re coming to the time of year for the political conventions, both Republican and Democratic, what (is) the purpose? We already know who the candidates are: Romney vs. Obama. Why not save these millions of dollars, put them toward the national debt, or distribute them evenly to every household throughout the U.S.? What a waste of money. This is just another political waste of our money. Since most Americans don’t like either candidates, vote Ron Paul.”
— Waynesboro, Pa.

“President Obama has the nerve to ask Mitt Romney to submit his tax statements, which Romney isn’t required to do. First, the president should submit papers to Congress about Fast and Furious. What are they hiding? Why we are picking up the tab for the ‘green investments’ Obama took the liberty to gamble? Now they are going bankrupt, Obama was warned. FBI finds most of these ‘green projects’ went to companies owned by Obama’s campaign donors. Wake up, America.”
— Hagerstown

“To the lady from Hagerstown who said Mitt Romney will look good for his first years because Republicans will start holding out, because they were told to not hire, so they can make the next president look good in the first term of election. ... First of all, President Obama had a majority of the Senate and the House his first two years. He could have passed anything he wanted, with the complete control of the House and the Senate, but he did nothing. The do-nothing Democrats haven’t passed a budget in three years. Republicans put many a budget plans forward, but the Senate always blocked them down.”
— Greencastle, Pa.

“I believe this would be the ideal time for a bona fide, good, independent candidate to run for president, because the two who are running right now are not any good. Nobody likes President Obama, and so far, I don’t think a whole lot of people like Mitt Romney. So this would be the perfect time for an independent who would be willing to step — this would be the ideal time for them to come forward and run.”
— Falling Waters, W.Va.

“Your caller complaining about President Obama, saying he was a disaster: His four years of cleaning up the Bush mess has been fantastic. Ninety-two percent of the people have jobs in this country, stock market’s doing great, housing market’s rebounding. Before you put Mitt Romney in there, all you people under 55 ought to realize he’s going to gut Medicare and you won’t have it, when you got to fend for yourself when you’re old. He’s a puppet to the tea party. ... He’s for lower taxes for the rich, and he’ll also get rid of Roe v. Wade, welfare, and other social programs that help this country.”
— Hagerstown

“From Halfway to Brightwood East: Would you please hurry and get this stadium built, so that we can pack ’em in? Hagerstown played at home last night against Kannapolis, to a whopping crowd of 862 people. Hurry and get it built. And if these local officials agree and build this stadium on my money, they should all go to jail. Quit dreaming and wake up.”
— Hagerstown

“I see they’re interested in the salary increases for county employees, and apparently, here we go, with the elected officials. It’s about time, when you do this, before we go down this road, let’s list the existing salaries and all the benefits, and I mean all the benefits, whether it’s health care, and everything else, and what they contribute. Then we get a fair look at it, as taxpayers. There’s only so much money out there. Be realistic.”
— Leitersburg

“To the Hagerstown caller who just doesn’t seem to get it: First two years of the Obama administration, the Obama administration had control of the White House and the Congress and the Senate. They also created all the czars, about which we don’t hear very much. The Republicans won in 2010, and took only over the House. Harry Reid, unfortunately, kept the Senate leadership. Nancy Pelosi went. I guess you need to read your history books, Mr. Democrat.”
— Hagerstown

“I’m (calling) about voter ID law. How come for years it was OK, and Bush had eight years to change it? You know, they could not believe how many people voted in 2008, so they’re trying to suppress  ... all races, because they think under 21 and over 60 have no intelligence. I cannot believe the disrespect our country has shown our president ... shouldn’t have Republicans collecting money for a job which they have not done for 3 1/2 jobs. They have been the most disrespectful. What are they doing to our country?”
— Hagerstown

“I’d like to know if anybody out there watches the movie on the TV guide channel. How can you watch a movie with all that TV guide running at the bottom? I was wondering how many people actually sit and watch a movie on that channel. And also, I agree with the person who said he turned to the ‘Weather Channel’ to get the weather, and ... I just wondered how they can rid of all that ... and just get the weather, like it used to be on the ‘Weather Channel.’”
