Milton D. Lawyer, 94, of West Water Street, Smithsburg, Md., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012, at Homewood at Williamsport (Md.) Nursing Home.

Born June 19, 1918, in Detour, Md., he was the son of the late Milton Oliver and Mary Elma (Fike) Lawyer of Thurmont, Md.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Gayle Elizabeth (Spessard) Lawyer, Jan. 21, 1992.

He was a graduate of Thurmont High School, Class of 1935.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

From 1947 to 1952, he owned and operated the Donut Shop Restaurant at 22 Summit Ave. and the Gayle Restaurant at 123 W. Franklin St., both in Hagerstown, Md. From 1953 to 1960, he was associated with United Life Insurance Co. From 1960 to 1962, he started his first auto body shop in Hagerstown, migrating to Smithsburg in 1963, where he started Smithsburg Auto Body Shop, Towing, Auto Parts & Auto Sales. He sold many people in the Smithsburg area their first cars, and his business still serves the community today.

He was a member of the Thurmont Church of the Brethren; life member of the Smithsburg Volunteer Fire Co.; life member of the Smithsburg Ambulance Co., serving as the first president and helping to get Smithsburg their first ambulance; member of South Mountain Rod & Gun Club of Smithsburg; past president of the Smithsburg Lions Club; and served on the Smithsburg Town Council from 1974 to 1994.

He is survived by one daughter, Beverly Gayle Lawyer Wiedeman of Manassas, Va.; two sons, Milton Delmer "Buddy" Lawyer Jr. and Brian Dean Lawyer, both of Smithsburg; four grandchildren, Barry Gene Wright of Sharpsburg, Md., Scott Milton Wright of Manassas, and Blake John Lawyer and Breonah Gayle Lawyer, both of Smithsburg; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, William Earle Lawyer Sr., Strafford Hunter Lawyer and Tolbert Fike Lawyer.

Services will be Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012, at 11 a.m. at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg. Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Doors will be open Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for the convenience of the public.
