Fire at vacant house near Huyetts Crossroads under investigation

August 29, 2012

HUYETTS — The cause of a fire Wednesday afternoon at a vacant house in the 16000 block of National Pike was being investigated by Maryland’s Office of the State Fire Marshal.

The fire at 16612 National Pike was called in at 5:34 p.m., said Lt. Brandon Grinder of the Maugansville Volunteer Fire Co. Damage to the two-story frame house was estimated at $50,000 to $60,000, he said.

The fire originated in the attic, but the cause was undetermined as of Wednesday night, Grinder said. He said the house had no electrical service.

A neighbor said the house had been vacant for a while.

Fire damage was evident to the metal roof and the west side of the house, and second-floor windows were broken out so firefighters could get inside.

Units from the Longmeadow, Williamsport and Halfway fire companies assisted Maugansville, along with the Rescue Hose Co. from Greencastle, Pa., and the Hagerstown Fire Department, Grinder said.

The last units were preparing to leave the scene at 8 p.m.
