Man shot, wounded by Berkeley County Sheriff's deputy on Yukon Drive

August 25, 2012

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A man was shot and wounded early Saturday when Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call in the 100 block of Yukon Drive.

Deputies went to Yukon Drive after receiving a call about a domestic violence incident, according to a sheriff’s office news release. A county 911 dispatcher said the call came in at 1:13 a.m.

When deputies arrived, they encountered a man threatening a female with unspecified weapons, deputies said. The man failed to obey orders from the deputies and threatened them with the weapons, deputies said.

A deputy shot the male, who later was flown to Fairfax (Va.) Hospital, deputies said.

“He was in surgery the last time I heard,” Sheriff Kenneth Lemaster said Saturday at 10:45 a.m. Lemaster did not know the man’s condition or how many times he might have been shot.

The man’s name will not be released until warrants are issued, Lemaster said.

The deputy was placed on administrative leave, deputies said.
