Suns jump on top early in a victory

SALISBURY, Md. — The Hagerstown Suns jumped on top of the Delmarva Shorebirds with a four-run first inning and finished with 14 hits to the Shorebirds’ three in Sunday’s 8-2 victory in the South Atlantic League.

Hagerstown (74-50, 32-23) completed a four-game sweep and remained 1 1/2 games in front of Hickory and West Virginia in the Northern Division’s second-half race.

The Suns greeted Shorebirds starter Williams Louico (0-6) by scoring four runs on five hits in the first, including RBI doubles by Khayyan Norfork, Cutter Dykstra, Adrian Nieto and Brett Newsome.

Hagerstown made it 5-0 in the third when Caleb Ramsey led off with a walk, took second on a wild pitch, went to third on a groundout and scored when Bryce Ortega reached base on third baseman Jason Esposito’s fielding error.

Delmarva (48-77, 20-36) got on the board against Suns starter Brian Rauh (2-2) in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Gregory Lorenzo singled and Rauh walked the next three hitters to force in a run.

The Shorebirds cut it to 5-2 in the fifth. Rauh hit Gregory Lorenzo with a pitch, then gave up Connor Narron’s double and Michael Ohlman’s sacrifice fly.

Hagerstown scored three runs on four singles in the eighth to pull away. Nieto, J.R. Higley and Ramsey drove in runs.

Suns pitchers walked nine Shorebirds, but Delmarva left 11 on base. Rauh went five innings, allowing two runs on three hits and six walks. Christian Meza worked around three walks in two innings of relief, Gregory Holt worked a hitless eighth and Leonard Hollins pitched a perfect ninth, striking out two.
