Alumni group to hold yard sale

The South Hagerstown High School Alumni Association will hold its annual yard sale Saturday, Sept. 22, in the South High parking lot. 

It’s a good time of year to clean out those closets and get ready for new school clothes. South High’s Alumni Association has a good way to recycle items.

It costs $10 to rent a space. Registration is required. To reserve a space, call Christy Moser at 301-416-7681 or you can register by mail. Registration forms can be found on the alumni website at

Class of 1959 plans picnic
The South Hagerstown High Class of 1959 will hold its annual picnic Saturday at Funkstown Park in the picnic pavilion at the entrance off Beaver Creek Road.

Lunch will be served at noon. There is no charge to attend. Class members are asked to bring a covered dish, salad or dessert.

Civil War exhibit
Valley Art Association will feature “Back Stories of the Civil War,” showing the effects the war had on citizens and property.

The exhibit is at the Mansion House Art Center, 501 Highland Way, in Hagerstown City Park. The exhibit is free.

The hours are Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.

Discovery Station
The “Take Me Out To the Ball Game ... More Than a Game” exhibit opened Aug. 4 at Discovery Station in downtown Hagerstown.


The exhibit highlights the winning 2008 Federal Little League and Hagerstown Pony League seasons, plus many other items related to baseball in Hagerstown.

 In addition, the Saturday Plus program will feature Dave Kaplan, “Mr. Butterfly,” as he presents “Summer Butterflies” at 2 p.m.

Lioness Club
The regular meeting of the Hagerstown Lioness Club will be Thursday, Sept. 6, at the Academy Theatre and Conference Center in downtown Hagerstown.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The club will welcome its scholarship recipients and their families.

The guest speaker for the evening will be Tara Horst of Leadership Washington County.

Lions Club
Tuesday — The club’s business and administrative meeting will take place. All members are encouraged to attend. A new-member installation is scheduled.
