Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down - August 18

August 17, 2012

Thumbs up to the Hagerstown City Council for finally meeting with representatives from the South Atlantic League, Maryland Stadium Authority and Washington Nationals player development at the same time. Tuesday’s meeting, according to Councilwoman Ashley Haywood, was a “major breakthrough” in the city’s attempt to negotiate a 20-year lease with the Hagerstown Suns.

Thumbs up to Fix JB Sports, whose latest facility improvement, six new tennis courts between Tuscarora School District’s middle and high schools, was unveiled this week. The organization, which is seeking to raise $1.97 million for upgrades to James Buchanan sports facilities, also has completed pool renovations and a new, six-lane track.

Thumbs down to the handful of athletes who were disqualified from competition or stripped of medals for various violations and infractions during the 2012 London Olympics. These individuals, who chose not to play fairly, disrespect the spirit of the Games.
