August 15, 2012

HAGERSTOWN — The Hickory Crawdads took control with a five-run seventh inning and snapped the Hagerstown Suns’ three-game winning streak with a 14-7 victory Wednesday night in a South Atlantic League game at Municipal Stadium.

Hickory (64-57, 28-24) won the final game of the three-game series after Hagerstown (70-50, 28-23) prevailed in the first two. West Virginia (29-23) took over the Northern Division’s second-half lead, with the Suns a half-game back and the Crawdads one game behind the Power.

Facing Suns reliever Ben Hawkins (3-3), Nick Urbanus led off the seventh with a double and Trever Adams singled. Leonard Hollins relieved Hawkins and gave up Zachary Cone’s two-run triple, giving the Crawdads an 8-6 lead.

Throwing errors on consecutive plays by Khayyan Norfork at third and by Hollins on a comebacker made it 9-6 with no outs. Jorge Alfaro walked to load the bases, a double-play grounder scored a run and Jordan Akins’ single made it 11-6.

Hickory added a run off Alex Kreis in the eighth on singles by Urbanus and Adams and Alejandro Selen’s two-out RBI double for a 12-6 lead. The Crawdads added two in the ninth off Wilson Eusebio, helped by a strikeout-wild pitch and a fielding error. Akins hit an RBI single.

The Suns got a run in the bottom half on Norfork’s RBI single for the final score.

Hickory took a 1-0 lead in the first off Hagerstown starter Taylor Hill. Urbanus hit a one-out double to center and scored on Cone’s two-out single to left.

The Suns tied the game at 1 off Crawdads starter Andrew Faulkner in the second. J.R. Higley hit a one-out single, went to second on a groundout and scored on a throwing error by shortstop Luis Sardinas.

Both teams scored twice in the third. The Crawdads took a 3-1 lead on Akins’ leadoff home run to left, Sardinas’ single and Adams’ RBI double to left. The Suns retied the game on Cutter Dykstra’s single, Adrian Nieto’s double to right and Justin Miller’s two-run double to left.

Hickory took a 5-3 lead in the top of the fourth. Drew Robinson led off with a homer to right, Kevin Torres hit a one-out double and Akins followed with an RBI single.

Hagerstown once again had an answer, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 6-5 lead. Three straight walks loaded the bases with one out, Dykstra hit an RBI single to right and right fielder Adams’ throwing error allowed two runs.

The Crawdads tied the game at 6 in the sixth against Hawkins. Robinson was hit by a pitch and scored on Alfaro’s double.
