Thelma Caroline Catherine Virginia Veronica Lewis McDonough, 98, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012, at Julia Manor Health Care Center with her devoted daughter at her side. She would have been 99 on Aug. 20.

Born Aug. 20, 1913, in Baltimore, Md., she was the daughter of the late Regina Black Lewis and Robert Fenwick Lewis. Her father was a descendent of the Lewises who founded Fenwick Island, Del.

She graduated from St. Elizabeth School in Baltimore. She was a lifelong incredible homemaker, loving wife, devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Thelma was a Brunswick-sponsored professional duckpin bowler in her younger years. She was a competitive swimmer and swam the Chesapeake Bay. She loved playing bingo, pinochle, making cakes for family birthdays and making her specialty potato salad. She loved and collected teddy bears. She was considered a sweet, beautiful, gentle lady who always had a good word and smile for everyone.

She was married to the late Edward J. McDonough on Jan. 15, 1935, at St. Elizabeth's Church in East Baltimore, and honeymooned in Ocean City, Md., her favorite vacation spot. Her husband preceded her in death on Feb. 18, 1992. They were married 57 years. She was a member of St. Ann Roman Catholic Church, Hagerstown, Md. Until 1958, she lived in Baltimore and was a parishioner of St. Elizabeth and St. Katharine in Baltimore, and Immaculate Heart of Mary in Towson, Md. When Thelma and her husband moved to Bel Air, Md., in 1958, she joined St. Margaret's parish, where she was a member of the bingo committee. She had resided at Village at Robinwood Assisted Living since October 2001.

She is survived by her two children, E. Patrick McDonough of Timonium, Md., and R. Kathleen (McDonough) Perini and her husband, Dominick J. Perini, of Hagerstown. Her daughter-in-law, Joan Ann (Mainolfi) McDonough, preceded her in death.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Ferdinand and Thomas Lewis; and six sisters, Helen Rosenberger, Lillian Davis, Dorothy Storm, Margaret Smith, Mary Kavanagh and Mabel Smith. She is also survived by nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

She is also survived by her nine grandchildren, Mary Theresa (Terry) McDonough and her husband, Brian Denton, Jeanne Frances McDonough Oswald and her husband, Christopher Oswald, Timothy Paul McDonough and his wife, Angie McDonough, Thomas Keith McDonough and his wife, Karen McDonough, Jennifer Lynn McDonough Cummins and her husband, Neil Cummins, Constance Ann McDonough Staab and her husband, John (Jay) Staab, Peter Edward Perini Sr. and his wife, Cynthia Lynn Hardin Perini, John Patrick Perini and his wife, Natalie Ann Perini, and Paul Andrew Perini.

She is also survived by 29 great-grandchildren. Terry's children are Stephen, Phillip, Michelle and Juliet Denton; Jeanne's children are Robert Alexander "Alex" Smith, Kelly and Thomas Oswald; Tim's children are Mark, Jeffrey and Meghan McDonough; Tom's children are Eric, Christina and Elaina McDonough; Jenny's children are Natalie, Noel and Nicholas Cummins; Connie's children are Jennifer, John and Joseph Staab; Peter's children are Meredith, Peter Jr. and Noah Perini; John's children are Patrick, Andrew, Matthew and Cathryn Perini; and Paul's children are Dominick, Maximus and Adair Perini.

The family will receive friends Monday, Aug. 20, 2012, one hour before the memorial Mass at Douglas Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on her 99th birthday, Monday, Aug. 20, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Douglas Fiery Funeral Home, with the Rev. Martin S. Nocchi as celebrant. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Memorial donations may be made in her memory to St. Ann Roman Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
