Preserve the Harvest Series — Freezing and Drying, Thursday, Aug. 16, from 7 to 9 p.m. Learn how to put away your home grown produce safely. The series costs $40, or $15 for each class. To register, call the Extension Office at 717-263-9226.

Tuesday, Aug. 14, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Pressure Canning — In this session, the Extension staff will discuss what foods are considered low in acid, how pressure canning works, the types of pressure canners and how to process foods using a pressure canner. Bring your pressure canner dial gauge and the staff will test it for accuracy. Participants will spend time in the kitchen preparing and pressure canning local green beans. Gardening with Fewer Pesticides — Thursday, Aug. 23, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Learn the principles of integrated pest management for the home gardener. The class costs $10. To register, call the Extension office at 717-263-9226.

Tuesday, Sept. 11, 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saving Seeds for the Future of Heirlooms — Master Gardeners Karen Greeley, Ron Brayton and Gary Stallings will lead this workshop, which will familiarize attendees with the basics of seed saving with an emphasis on heirloom vegetables. Participants will learn why and how to collect and save seeds, and learn the difference between hybrid and open-pollinated varieties. Participants will gain hands-on experience. Tuesday, Sept. 18, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fruitful Canning — In this session, the Extension staff will discuss what foods are considered high in acid and can be safely preserved using the water bath canning method. To reach the Washington County Extension office, drive about seven miles south of Hagerstown from the I-70 exit onto Sharpsburg Pike.

The office is in the Washington County Agricultural Education Center complex.

The Franklin County, Pa., Extension office is at 181 Franklin Farm Lane, Chambersburg.

From Hagerstown, take Interstate 81 north to the U.S. 30 east exit. Take the first road to the left, which is Franklin Farm Lane.
