The South Hagerstown High School Sports Boosters Club will hold its first meeting of the season today at 7 p.m. in the media center at South High. Parents of incoming ninth-graders are encouraged to attend.

County Democrats plan picnic for Aug. 23

The Washington County Democrats picnic will be Thursday, Aug. 23, from 6 to 9 p.m. at The Improved Order of Red Men Tribe 84, 16129 Lappans Road, Williams-port. Tickets cost $25 in advance or $30 at the gate. Tickets for children and students cost $12 in advance and $17 at the gate. Those ages 5 and younger and active-duty military personnel will be admitted free.

The organizers expect several guests to be on hand, including Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler and 6th District Congressional candidate John Delaney.

Tuesday — Jill Estavillo, project manager for the proposed new stadium in Hagerstown, will talk about the project.

Class of 1959 plans annual picnic

The South Hagerstown High School Class of 1959 will hold its annual picnic Saturday, Aug. 25, at the Funkstown Park picnic pavilion, which is at the entrance off Beaver Creek Road.

Lunch will be served at noon. There is no charge to attend.
Attendees are asked to bring a covered dish, salad or dessert.  Hamburgers, hot dogs, steamers and soft drinks will be supplied by the reunion committee.

SHHS alumni golf tournament a success

The South Hagerstown High Alumni Association golf tournament at Beaver Creek Country Club on June 14 was a success.

With the proceeds, the alumni association awarded five $1,000 scholarships and a $500 award from the Class of 1961. Those receiving the scholarships were Kaitlyn Spangler, Umar Mahmood, Sarah Bjerga, Stephanie Swope, Teri Keller and Lauren Fahrney.

The group thanks all of the golfers, businesses and individuals who supported the tournament, including diamond, gold, green and cart sponsors.

Thanks to all of the volunteers and to the Steiners at Beaver Creek Country Club and Phil Petry’s Barbeque.

Next year’s golf outing will be June 13. Bring your ugly golf shoes for a contest.

Three graduate from Life Christian University

The Hagerstown Campus of Life Christian University held its 2012 graduation ceremony  Aug. 5 at Cutting Edge Ministries, 32 East Ave., Hagerstown, following the morning worship service. 

The following students graduated:

  • Michelle Lee Gordon graduated magna cum laude with an advanced diploma in theology
  • Drista M. Stultz graduated summa cum laude with a Master of Arts in theology
  • Cheri Lynn Belton graduated summa cum laude with a diploma in theology.

Following the ceremony, a luncheon in honor of the graduates was served in the church fellowship hall.

Life Christian University offers a full curriculum of Bible-related courses. 

Evening classes are held at 32 East Ave.
