Skole hammers Riverdogs

August 08, 2012

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Matt Skole went 3-for-5 with two home runs and three RBIs as the Hagerstown Suns snapped a three-game skid with a 6-0 victory over the Charleston Riverdogs on Wednesday night.

With the victory, the Suns moved into a three-way tie for first place with West Virginia and Hickory in the South Atlantic League’s Northern Division second-half standings.

Hagerstown took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning on Skole’s one-out, solo blast to right.

The Suns went up 3-0 in the fifth. Caleb Ramsey led off a walk, went to second on a single by J.R. Higley and scored on a double by Billy Burns. Bryce Ortega then singled to score Higley.

After Hagerstown extended its lead to 5-0 in the seventh on RBI singles by Ortega and Skole, Skole made it 6-0 in the ninth with his league-leading 27th home run — a leadoff solo shot to right.

Burns, Ortega, Adrian Nieto and Angelberth Montilla each finished with two of the Suns’ 12 hits.

Hagerstown starter Taylor Hill (10-6) went six innings for the win, allowing no runs despite giving up eight hits and two walks. Richie Mirowski pitched two innings of perfect relief for the Suns, and Leonard Hollins followed with a perfect ninth.
