Portraiture class offered at HCC

Hagerstown Community College will offer a portraiture class on Wednesday afternoons, from 1 to 4:35 p.m., beginning Aug. 29 and ending Dec. 12 at the Kepler Center.

Intended for those who have basic drawing skills, the course will provide students with an understanding of portraiture. Class exercises will focus on facial features and expressions, lighting, and the use of gestures and hands in portraiture. Students will begin the course by using charcoal, but will be allowed to use other materials of their choosing after the first two weeks of class.

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 0462 in Smithsburg had a total net loss of more than 8 pounds for the week.

Quarter and monthly awards were presented. Mack had three months at or below his goal weight. Ola had a 14.5-pound loss for the quarter. Carol had a 6.5-pound loss for June; she has not had a gain since joining TOPS seven weeks ago, and has lost more than 15 pounds. Mary was honored for having a loss over her vacation. Sally was recognized for having a loss after her birthday.

Starting Thursday and continuing for the next six weeks, the chapter will be working on food exchanges.

This week it will be counting starches.

The group meets every Thursday at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 51 N. Main St., Smithsburg.

Weigh-in starts at 5:30 p.m. and the chapter meeting starts at 6 p.m.

Craft Fun Fest

Crafters, flea market and yard sale vendors are wanted for Shiloh United Methodist Church’s outdoor Fun Fest.

Spaces are available for $10. The event will be at the church Saturday, Sept. 15, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The church is at 19731 Shiloh Church Road.

If anyone is interested in obtaining a space, call Dianne Keller at the church at 30l-797-4083 by Sept. 8.

There will also be music, antique cars, children’s games and a karate demonstration.

Breakfast and lunch will be available, along with homemade soups, sandwiches and baked goods.
