Taught by her mother to bake, Cheri Belton, 47, of Hagerstown has been in the kitchen since she was a child.

"I've always had a passion for it," she said.

After getting laid off last year, Belton heeded the advice and words of friends who said it was time to open her own baking business.

About a month ago, Belton started making appearances with her business, Potter's Daughter Catering & Confections, at City Farmers Market to gain exposure.

She'll be one of 16 vendors who participate in Taste of the Market Saturday, Aug. 11, at City Farmers Market in downtown Hagerstown. The first 200 people who receive participation cards will able to be sample some of the food for free. The event kicks off at 9 a.m.

According to Karen Giffin, city community affairs manager, there will be a variety of items to sample including fresh produce, baked goods and dairy.

Giffin said Taste of the Market is "a way to promote vendors with different types of food." The event is similar to the Taste of the Arts event that was held in May in downtown Hagerstown.

She said she wants local people to experience local foods at the City Farmers Market. She also hopes to "entice new customers to experience the market."

In her time with City Farmers Market, Belton said it's been "a great avenue to open up a business."

And even in her relatively short time with the market, which is usually open from 5 a.m. to noon Saturdays, she has found that she has started building a customer base.

"I have a couple of regulars who come by," she said. "It's a great way to meet people."

Those stopping at Belton's tables will find cake pops or chocolate-covered pretzels. But her most popular items are her blueberry and pumpkin cheesecake muffins. Belton said she'll have some as part of the Saturday samplings.

Belton said she's enjoying her new career. She thanked Rosa Myers of Hagerstown who helped give her seed money to start her business.

"She gave me a check and said, ‘Go chase your dreams,'" she said.

Belton said Taste of the Market will be a fun event on Saturday, and noted that events like this will provide a healthy competition among the bakers.

"It causes us to do our best, to provide the best and have a lot of fun," she said.
