Gladys Irene (Plume) Bittinger, 84, of Smithsburg, passed away Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012, at her home.

She had several nicknames, such as Mrs. B or Mrs. B and puppets. Her daddy used to call her “Giddy Gat.”

Born Aug. 11, 1927, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd Wesley and Susan Irene (McGowan) Plume.

Gladys started at Offray Ribbon when it opened its doors in Hagerstown. She worked in many different departments over the 50 years she was employed there.

Mrs. B taught children’s church for more than 65 years in many churches in Maryland and West Virginia. Her passions in life were her family and her relationship with God, and teaching children. Also, playing in her flower bed. She was a well-respected and honored member of her community. She blessed every life she touched, and is loved and missed by all who know her.

Gladys is survived by her loving husband and sweetheart of 65 years, Aaron Lehman Bittinger; two daughters, Darlene Brewer and husband, Archie, of Hagerstown, and Alice Lafferty and husband, Meeker “Dennis” of Fairplay; two sisters, Alice Plume of Hagerstown, and Shirley Gardiner and husband, George, of Winchester, Va.; two brothers, Eugene “Buddy” Plume of Hagerstown and Kenneth Plume of Smithsburg; granddaughter, Annette and Eddie Clark of Mercersburg, and their children, Mandy, Matt, Aaron and Rachel; grandson, Randall Shoemaker of Mercersburg, and his children, Dylan and Garrett; granddaughter, Susan Shupp and husband, Shawn, of Clear Spring; granddaughter, Kendra and Steve Shoemaker of Clear Spring, and their children, Roger, Don’A and Derick; two great-great-grandsons, Weston and Chase; granddaughter, Christine and Chuck Parks of Fairplay, and their children, Joseph and Alicia; many other relatives and friends, Wilma Smith of Smithsburg, Tawana Kesecker and Nicholes Wilson of Smithsburg, and Nicole Marner of Mishaweika, Ind.; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Madalone Hutzell and her husband, Ardell, Louise Miller and her husband, Warren, and Virginia Edwards and her husband, Robert; a brother, Richard Plume; and her eldest grandson, Donald L. Shoemaker.

A funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. today at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Jonathan Laye and Pastor Tim Fisher officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Friends were received from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Granny was truly a Proverbs 31 woman. In Proverbs 31:28, the Word of God states, “Her children rise up and call her blessed. Her husband sings her praises.”

The family would like to thank Pastor Laye, Pastor Tim Fisher, the Bayer Dr. Community, Dr. Newbold, Hospice and the many others that have helped us through this difficult time. Granny would like to personally thank her daughter, friend, caregiver and angel. Sissy, I love you.
