Hagerstown advances to championship round at PONY-14 East Zone tourney

HIGH POINT, N.C. —Hagerstown defeated Chesterfield (Va.) 8-1 on Friday night in the losers' bracket final at the PONY-14 East Zone Tournament.

Hagerstown, which improved to 3-1 at the tournament, must defeat unbeaten New Bedford (Mass.) twice Saturday in the championship round to win the title and advance to the World Series.

Earlier Friday, Dalton Stewart had three hits and two RBIs and Cody Hammond went the distance on the mound for the victory as Hagerstown defeated host High Point 7-4 in a losers’ bracket game.

Zach Andrews had two hits and two RBIs for Hagerstown while Colby Byers, Justin Smith and Hammond each had two hits in the victory.

Hagerstown was sent to the losers’ bracket on Thursday night, falling 11-6 to New Bedford. Hammond had two hits and two RBIs and Smith had two hits for Hagerstown in the loss.

Columbia 9, Funkstown 5

FREDERICK, Md. — Columbia Post 300 eliminated Funkstown Post 211 from the Maryland State Legion Baseball Tournament at McCurdy Field on Thursday.

Funkstown (22-10) had a 1-2 record in the tournament to finish sixth.

The Hagerstown PONY League will hold its fall ball registration this Monday through Friday (Aug. 6-10), from 6 to 8:30 p.m. each day, at its field on Jefferson Boulevard.
