The first program for the Longmeadow Lions Club year 2012-13 will be given at the Thursday, Aug. 9, meeting. A representative from Baby Basics of Greater Hagerstown Inc. will discuss this nonproft volunteer organization’s activities.

The club meets at 6:30 p.m. the second and fourth Thursday of each month at Always Ron’s. Those interested in a visitation can call the secretary at 301-739-2815 to make a reservation.

Get Ready, Get Set, Go!

On Wednesday, Aug. 22, all Washington County Public Schools open for the school year.  School supplies will have been gathered, labeled, and organized as eager students, their families, their teachers, administrators and other school staff prepare for a great new school year.

As a former Maugansville fifth-grade teacher, I always loved getting my classroom ready and eagerly anticipated the students and their families I would be working with. I was hopeful, excited and, yes, even a little bit anxious.  Every new school year challenged me to get to know my new students, their families and the curriculum so that I could be the best teacher I could be.

I attribute my optimism to my early life as an army brat when I moved every three or more years.  This is when I learned to welcome each move as a chance to form new relationships and to learn new things. Even now, retired teacher that I am, I still feel the thrill of beginning a new school year full of hope and opportunity.

May you all have a great school year…a year full of opportunities.
