The Hagerstown PONY-14 All-Stars opened play Wednesday in the East Zone Tournament with a 13-1 win over the host team, High Point Black.

Trent Rider threw a complete-game two-hitter and Colby Byers had three hits and four RBIs, ending the game on a grand slam that put the 10-run rule into effect.

Zach Andrews had two hits and three RBIs and Justin Smith had two hits and two RBIs for Hagerstown.

Hagerstown played New Bedford in a winners’ bracket game Thursday night, but no information was available.

Sharpsburg Blue-Gray 7-8 Tournament

Maugansville 11, South Mountain 5

Maugansville: Ethan Caudo 3 hits; Austin Dent, Bennett Decker 2 hits each.

South Mountain: Peyton Smith 2 hits.

Note: Maugansville will face National on Friday night at 6 in the championship round. Maugansville must win twice.


Grier wins MAPGA event

ALDIE, Va. — Ashley Grier, a Smithsburg graduate and former Maryland state high school girls champion, shot a 1-over-par 73 on Thursday to win the 2012 Middle Atlantic PGA Women’s Championship at Creighton Farms Golf Club. 

Grier, a PGA apprentice at Beaver Creek Country Club, had six birdies to offset four bogeys and a triple.

Grier was coming off a ninth-place finish at the MAPGA’s Assistant Championship, held July 30-31.


Crabtree finishes dominant run

Ryan Crabtree shot a 3-over-par 75 at Beaver Creek Country Club on Thursday to win the WACO Junior Golf event and wrap up the player of the year championship.

Crabtree won four of the six events at Yingling’s and three of the six at Beaver Creek to finish with 919 points. Nick Franki was second in the season standings with 830.

In Thursday’s event, Chad Shindle finished second with an 80 and Cody Trunkle was third with an 81.

Williamsport soccer tryouts

The Williamsport High School boys soccer team will hold a mandatory parent/player meeting on Aug. 10 at 6 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Important documents will be reviewed and completed physical forms collected.
