Essay contest to commemorate Battle of Antietam's 150th anniversary

SHARPSBURG — Antietam National Battlefield is holding an essay contest to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Antietam.

The contest focuses on the themes of character, memory and freedom, and is open to any student entering grades Kindergarten to 12 in the upcoming school year.

Contest submissions will be accepted until Aug. 24 at 4 p.m.

Prizes will be provided by the Western Maryland Interpretive Association and the Sharpsburg Historical Society.

Contest rules, prompts and scoring guides are available at www.nps.gov/anti/forkids/essay contest.htm. Hard copies can be picked up at the Antietam National Battlefield Visitors Center or most branches of the Washington County Free Library.

On Sept. 17, 1862, more than 23,000 Americans were killed or wounded or went missing in the Battle of Antietam.
