Mail Call - July 26

July 26, 2012

“I would like to just write a line about the picture you had in the paper the other day concerning the Civil War battle that happened in downtown Hagerstown. What I saw in the background reminded me of an old ghost town. The people of Hagerstown should thank your mayor and council for keeping your town so authentic-looking.”
— Greencastle, Pa.

“This is to the person from Fairfield, Pa. I don’t know if you guys will print this or not, but he’s talking in there about gays being, coming out of religion. Well, religion says God told us that in the New Testament, a man shouldn’t live with a man, a woman shouldn’t live with a woman. What does that mean? That means that gay marriage is wrong.”
— Hagerstown

“You know, you ride around in Washington County, and we have a beautiful place to live, and all of a sudden you come up on a spot where somebody has thrown a bunch of trash alongside the road. Parents, please teach your children to keep the stuff in the car until they come to a waste can. It really ruins our scenery.”
— Hagerstown

“If our Congress wants to repeal the Obamacare that provides health care for everyone in our country, which is much needed, and I feel that Congress should give up their health care. Every American should have access to health care, and that’s the bottom line. And if Mitt Romney does not want to give more than two years’ worth of taxes, he should not be our president. I don’t know why he doesn’t want to give up more ... but when I bought my first house, I had to provide more than two years’ worth of my tax returns. There’s just something about old Mitt that he’s hiding.”
— Hagerstown

“When a man makes a comment that he and his brothers are going to make it bad for the president to get elected in the next quarter, and they send their money overseas and put all their money in overseas bank accounts, and they send all their work overseas, they don’t have the right to stand up there and sing ‘America the Beautiful.’ They’re not running America, they’re running it down.”
— Falling Waters, W.Va.

“I see in today’s paper that Berkeley County got the Macy’s fulfillment center that will potentially employ 1,200 people. Washington County is getting a new Suns stadium. I think we ought to be asking our local and county government what is going on here.”
— Halfway

“Thanks, county commissioners, for your $23-a-month increase on our pension. It’s a shame that you can spend all this money on the school board’s pension, when you can’t even do it to your own county government workers. Twenty-three dollars a month? Big deal.”
— Washington County

“In response to a couple of the callers: I’m rich, and I’m not going to start any businesses until President Obama is out, because I don’t want to be beaten to death for being successful. And also, I’m so proud I make some people sick.”
— Big Pool
