First-place Suns get fourth straight win

July 24, 2012

HAGERSTOWN — Justin Miller had three hits, including a two-run homer, and Bryce Ortega had three hits and three RBIs to lead the Hagerstown Suns to a 6-2 victory over the Lakewood BlueClaws on Tuesday at Hagerstown’s Municipal Stadium.

Cutter Dykstra also homered for the Suns (61-40, 19-13), who have won four straight to take over sole possession of first place in the South Atlantic League Northern Division second-half standings. Hickory, which lost to Delmarva on Tuesday, is one game back.

Hagerstown starter Christian Meza (6-1) pitched five scoreless innings for the victory, allowing a hit and two walks while striking out six.

The Suns went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first on Dykstra’s two-out, solo shot to left off Lakewood’s Ethan Stewart (4-9).

The Suns extended their lead to 4-0 in the third. Hendry Jimenez led off by reaching second on an error. He went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout by Ortega. After Dykstra walked, Miller blasted a two-run homer to center.

After the BlueClaws (43-58, 17-15) cut it to 4-1 in the sixth and 4-2 in the eighth, the Suns added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Caleb Ramsey led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and went to third on a double by Angelberth Montilla. Two outs later, Billy Burns walked to load the bases, and Ortega followed with a two-run single to center.

Ramsey finished with two of Hagerstown’s 11 hits.
