James Adam Gilbert, 82, of Hagerstown, passed away Monday, July 23, 2012, at Golden Living Center, Hagerstown.

Born May 7, 1930, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Wendelin F. and Eva (Benner) Gilbert Sr.

Mr. Gilbert had attended St. Ambrose Elementary School and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Randallstown, Md.

He was a four-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he was an aircraft mechanic helper.

He retired after 25 years of service as a detective for the Baltimore City Police Department. After his retirement, he worked with the Attorney General's office with the Medicaid Fraud Unit, and also worked as a major league scout for the Baltimore Orioles, where he was inducted into the Orioles scouting hall of fame. He also, along with Cal Ripken Sr., ran the Cal Ripken baseball camp at Mount St. Mary's College. He was at one time the manager of the Oriolelanders baseball team, which is a showcase baseball team of high school-aged players sponsored by the Orioles.

He also was a member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 378, Hagerstown, and the F.O.P. Lodge No. 3, Baltimore.

He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Blanche L. (Shatzer) Gilbert; one son, Thomas P. Gilbert (Kathleen) of Glenville, W.Va.; one daughter, Teresa "Terry" Davis (Richard) of White Hall, Md.; one stepdaughter, Cathy M. Inkeles (Andrew) of Gaithersburg, Md.; four grandchildren, Mikayla, Clair and Daniel Gilbert, and Hope Davis; two stepgrandchildren, Heather Sylvester (Kenny) and Lauren Ricciardelli (Eric); five great-grandchildren, Tyler, Nathaniel, Cameron, Colton and Chase; a nephew who was like a brother to him, Robert Ackerman (Barbara) of Reisterstown, Md.; and a niece whom he also grew up with, Shirl Ackerman-Ross (Jack) of Delaware.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Wendelin F. Gilbert Jr.; and a sister, Elizabeth Donaldson.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, July 27, 2012, at 1 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. James Nirappel and the Rev. Gregg Meserole officiating.

Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded.

Friends will be received at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.
