Charles James Smith, 84, of Appletown Road in Boonsboro, Md., passed away Sunday, July 22, 2012, at Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown.

Born Nov. 2, 1927, he was the son of the late Elmer Victor and Mary Naomi (Reeder) Smith from Middletown, Md.

He was a 1947 graduate of Boonsboro High School, where he met and later married his high school sweetheart, Marian E. (Rohrer) Smith of Rohrersville, Md.

Upon graduation from high school, he was employed with Acme Markets, where he worked as a clerk and then eventually as a store manager, retiring in 1988.

He was a member of Mount Zion Lutheran Church at Locust Grove in Rohrersville.

Charles will be fondly remembered for his love of hunting, fishing, raising purple martins and spending time with his family. He was an avid NASCAR fan; his favorite driver was Jeff Gordon.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marian E. (Rohrer) Smith of Boonsboro, whom he married Aug. 4, 1947; one daughter, Brenda Kay (Smith) Sulcer of Hagerstown; two grandsons, Brenton W. Sulcer and his fiancée, Melissa Ward, both of Sharpsburg, Md., and Ryan E. Sulcer of Hagerstown; and two sisters, Geraldine Smith of Middletown and Rosalie Stull of Boonsboro.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike in Boonsboro. The Rev. Blaine E. Feightner will officiate. Final resting-place ceremonies will follow at Boonsboro Cemetery, where Charles will be laid to rest next to his parents.

Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
