Girls on the Run coming to Boonsboro

Girls on the Run of Washington County is coming to Boonsboro Elementary School. 

The 10-week program inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experienced-based curriculum that integrates running.

The program for third- through fifth-grade girls promotes physical, emotional and social well-being through games, discussions and activities while training for a 3.1-mile running event.

The program starts Monday, Sept. 17, and will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30 to 4 p.m. The program costs $150, which includes T-shirt and water bottle.  Financial aid is available.

Items sought for fall auction

The Antietam Detachment of the Marine Corps League will hold a fundraising auction this fall at Cochran’s Auction Complex in Boonsboro. The group is accepting contributions of sale items to be stored on-site, thanks to Jim and Leslie Cochran and the Bowman Co. Pickup might be available for large items.

Car show planned

First Hose Co. of Boonsboro and Pleasant Valley Ruritan are co-sponsoring the eighth annual car show Saturday, Aug. 4. 

The event, to be held at Station 8 on Md. 67 south of Rohrersville, will include a chicken barbecue and a flea market.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and all proceeds will benefit the fire company. 

There are 11 classes for car entries, including a new category — vintage apparatus. Vehicles entering the show must be on the field for judging by 11 a.m.

Golf outing

A reminder that the father/son, mother/daughter 18-hole scramble golf tournament sponsored by the Kiwanis Club will take place Friday, Aug. 3, at 11:30 a.m. at Beaver Creek Country Club on Mapleville Road, north of Boonsboro. 

The entry fee costs $150 per team, which includes dinner. Each two-person team can consist of any combination (parent, child, grandparent, in-law or “step” relationship, male or female).  If not related, you can “adopt” your teammate. If adopting, you must have at least 20 years difference in age.

Library news

At the library this week, a teen craft program and two movies are on tap. 

Tuesday, adults are invited to enjoy the film “The Artist” at 6 p.m. 

On Friday, teens are invited to make a do-it-yourself owl earbud holder and bouncy balls beginning at 5 p.m.

On Saturday at 11:30 a.m., the family movie “Treasure Buddies” will be shown.
