Golfing for Nonprofits to be held at Whitetail

The Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce invites the community to its Golfing for Nonprofits event Friday, Aug. 24, at Whitetail Resort, 11573 Blairs Valley Road in Mercersburg, Pa.

Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. and the shotgun start will be at 8:30 a.m.

There will be three flights in the scramble, best-ball format.

Proceeds will benefit Star Community.

The entry fee costs $75 for individuals ($85 after Aug. 1) or $300 per foursome ($340 after Aug. 1) and includes coffee and doughnuts at registration, 18 holes of golf (including cart), meal after play, soft drinks and beer served all day and prizes. Mail checks to Chamber of Commerce, 28 W. Washington St., Suite 200, Hagerstown, MD 21740.

The event gives nonprofit organizations the opportunity to host a fundraising golf tournament without all the stress. The chamber handles all the administrative tasks, freeing up the nonprofits to raise funds for the event. The chamber, in turn, gives up to 75 percent of the money raised back to the nonprofits.

Networking event hosted by ABC chapter

A networking membership event will be held Thursday, Aug. 2, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Rentals Unlimited, 1458 S. Potomac St. in Hagerstown.

Associated Builders and Contractors, Cumberland Valley Chapter members are encouraged to bring a nonmember.

The event is free but registration is required by Monday, July 30.

Vacation Bible school opens today at church

Haven Lutheran Church invites all children to this year’s vacation Bible school program today through Friday.

The theme is “Sky: Everything is Possible with God.”

It will include Bible-learning activities, singing, teamwork-building games and other activities.

The church will join an international missions’ effort of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America to fight malaria in several African countries, joining the effort to send more than a million mosquito nets to protect children and their families.

The school is for those ages 3 to fifth grade and will run from 5:45 to 8:30 p.m. each day.

A light supper will be served at the beginning of the program.

The church is at 1035 Haven Road in Hagerstown.

Longmeadow Lions hosts guest speaker

Katie Dyke, disability support adviser at Hagerstown Community College, was the featured speaker at a recent Longmeadow Lions Club meeting.

Dyke assists special- needs students at HCC.

The program at HCC started with 45 students and this year, 211 students are on the disability rolls.

After the presentation, Longmeadow Lions Club’s annual donation for the HCC Social Support Service Scholarship was presented.

The Longmeadow Lions Club meeting on Thursday will be the annual club picnic at the Timmons residence. Members are reminded to call in reservations to the club secretary by today.
