HAGERSTOWN — Chambersburg got on top of Hagerstown ‘B’ early in the first game of the PONY Section Tournament at Funkhouser Park, scoring an 8-1 victory on Saturday night.
“The first four hitters for Chambersburg hit the ball extremely well and we couldn’t get them out,” Hagerstown manager Ed Kipe said. “That was the difference in the game.”
The first four hitters combined for seven of Chambersburg’s 10 hits. Carlin Christian, the third hitter, slugged two home runs and finished with three hits and three RBIs. Ian Patterson, the second hitter, had two hits, including a homer, and three RBIs.
“We got some good timely power by Carlin and Ian,” said Chambersburg manager Rick Christian, who is Carlin’s father. “We kept adding onto our lead. We scored in every inning but the fifth. We ran the bases well. We try to put pressure on the other team. It was a great team effort.”
Rick Christian has Washington County ties. He is a 1985 graduate of North Hagerstown High School and helped Hagerstown Community College win the 1986 Region XX Tournament his freshman season. He was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1986 and played several seasons in the Cardinals’ minor league system.
Chambersburg starting pitcher Trenton Ebersole gave up one unearned run and one walk while striking out eight in six innings to get the win. Reliever Austin Wilson pitched a scoreless seventh.
“It was a great pitching performance by Trent,” Rick Christian said. “He had great command of his curveball.”
Chambersburg took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Jordan Shaffer and Patterson walked before Carlin Christian singled to center to load the bases. Shaffer came home on a wild pitch.
Chambersburg made it 2-0 in the second when Dion Myers walked, stole second and scored on a single to left by Shaffer. Christian’s solo homer to center made it 3-0 in the third.
Chambersburg erupted for four runs in the fourth to make it 7-0. With one out, Myers singled to center and stole second before Shaffer walked. Patterson ripped a two-run double to center and Christian followed with a two-run homer to center.
Hagerstown scored its only run in the fifth. Caden Keplinger and Patrick O’Conner singled and both advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Tanner Canfield. After Colton Repp made it to first on a dropped third strike, Keplinger scored when Matt Shipley reached on a fielder’s choice.
Chambersburg got its final run in the sixth on Patterson’s solo homer.
