Salute to Independence beat the heat

To the editor:

For the hardy spectators who braved an oppressive heat and stifling humidity to spend the afternoon and evening at Antietam Battlefield Saturday, July 7, the rewards far exceeded the discomfort.

The Maryland Symphony Orchestra’s Salute to Independence was outstanding.  This concert is an annual gift to the public which just gets better year after year. Maybe it was because the heat kept the number of participants lower than usual or maybe it was an enhanced speaker system, but the music seemed to dominate over the noise of the crowd and allowed the richness  of the music and talent of the orchestra to be enjoyed and appreciated.  The trumpet solo was especially rousing.

The musical selections were  so well chosen and created a varied and exciting program which seemed to have wide appeal to the audience of adults, children, music-lovers and patriots alike.  And, of course, the fireworks were a fantastic finale to the evening!

Thanks to the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, the National Park Service, PNC Bank, volunteers and everyone  who helped to make this event possible.
