2. Artillery demos
Living history volunteers will portray infantry and artillery units for a demonstration of loading and firing cannons. Saturday, July 28, and Sunday, July 29. Antietam National Battlefield, Sharpsburg Pike, north of Sharpsburg. Go to www.nps.gov/anti.

3. Smithsburg artists, poets
Washington County Historical Society hosts a reception for a display of artwork and poetry by historical Smithsburg residents, such as this early-20th-century sculpture by Emily  Bishop. The reception will be 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 24. Miller House, 135 W. Washington St., downtown Hagerstown. Free and open to the public. Go to www.washcomdhistoricalsociety.org.
