Mrs. Mabel L. Palmer Basore, 91, of Hagerstown, died Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown.

Born July 22, 1920, in Funkstown, she was the daughter of the late Jacob Russel and Nora Mae Gouker Palmer.

She was the wife of the late George E. Basore, who preceded her in death in 1989.

Mrs. Basore worked for the Department of Social Services for more than 30 years, working with foster care, adoption and child abuse. She co-owned Basore Oil Co. with her husband, where she served as secretary/treasurer.

She graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1938 and from Bridgewater College in 1942.

Mabel was a member of Hagerstown Church of the Brethren, where she served as superintendent of the junior high school department, Sunday school teacher, co-director and chairwoman of the youth department along with her husband, on the deacons board, and was chairwoman of worship commission.

She served on the board of directors of the Hagerstown Christian Women's Club.

Since 1956, she was a member of the Hagerstown Business & Professional Women's Club, serving as president and vice president, as well as chairman of various committees.

She also served as president of the State Federation of Business & Professional Women and as chairwoman of various committees; served on the National Federation Board of the Business & Professional Women and on various committees; and board of directors of the Hagerstown Girls Club, serving as a volunteer, board president and past regional chairman.

Mrs. Basore is survived by a niece and nephew, Judith A. Baker and husband, George, and David L. Hebb, all of Hagerstown; a great-niece, Tammy A. Foster and husband, Jeff; and great-great-niece, Jazzmyn E. Foster.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Jane R. White and Margaret E. Clipp Wickware.

There will not be calling at the funeral home. The family will receive friends Saturday, July 21, 2012, at 1 p.m. until time of a memorial service at Hagerstown Church of the Brethren. Her pastor, the Rev. Edward L. Poling, will officiate. Private interment will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
