Charles R. Hurley Sr. 77, of Old Catoctin Road, Smithsburg, Md., passed away Sunday, July 15, 2012, at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md.
Born July 22, 1934, near Foxville, Md., he was the son of Catherine C. (Kuhn) Hurley of Foxville and the late Floyd G. Hurley.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances (McKeller) Hurley, in 1992.
He attended Foxville School.
He was a Vietnam War veteran, retiring from the U.S. Air Force in 1976 after 20 years of service.
After retirement, he was employed as a civil engineer for Langley Air Force Base for 20 years.
He was a member of Mount Bethel United Methodist Church of Foxville, and South Mountain Rod and Gun Club of Smithsburg.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and family.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by one daughter, Kathy Hartman and husband, Mike, of Foxville; one son, Charles R. Hurley Jr. of Yorktown, Va.; two brothers, Donald Hurley and Ralph Hurley, both of Foxville; one sister, Nancy Glass of Foxville; three grandchildren, Michael Hartman Jr. of Foxville, and Charles “Ricky” Hurley III and Sydney Hurley, both of Yorktown; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Friday, July 20, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Mount Bethel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ronald Kurtz officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg, Md. A graveside service will be Monday, July 23, 2012, at 1 p.m. at Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News, Va., with full military honors.
