Navy Fireman Samuel T. Socks of Fairplay graduated from basic training at the U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. on March 30. 

He is attending A-School at the Navy Nuclear Power Training Command in Goose Creek, S.C.

Socks is the son of Julie and Michael Shoemaker of Fairplay, Earl Socks of Clear Spring and the grandson of Nancy Bowman of Williamsport. 

He is a 2011 graduate of Washington County Technical High School.

Army National Guard Pvt. David J. Kerns graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, he studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

Kerns is the son of Diana Stevens of West Main Street in Hancock.

He is a 2007 graduate of Hancock Middle-Senior High School.
