Mail Call - July 11

July 10, 2012

“During President Obama’s 2010 State of the Union speech, he insulted the Supreme Court justices who were sitting in the front row, for a law they passed that Obama said he would change. Sen. Obama made it clear he wasn’t in favor of Judge John Roberts being appointed Supreme Court justice by Bush, on grounds Roberts was prejudiced. Now Obama is all smiles, shakes Roberts’ hand. ... It is a mystery, as Roberts made it clear in April, socialized health care was unconstitutional.”

“Does anyone in Washington County enforce burning regulations? It was my understanding that burning trash in Washington County was prohibited. The sheriff’s department does not handle burning complaints, the fire marshal does not handle burning complaints. I’ve been told by these departments that only the health department enforces the burning laws. Only after calling them twice this week, the burning on Catawba Place continues. What the heck? If no one enforces burning laws, why are we all ... what the heck, we might as well all burn our trash in our backyards and save money.”

“I just wanted to call and say down at Boonsboro at Shafer Park, they had a great thing for the Fourth of July. We really enjoyed the fireworks, and it was the first time I’ve ever been there and I plan on going back again. You all did a great job.”
— Hagerstown

“The problem with rail trail advocates is that you either don’t realize or won’t admit that there’s a limited, very limited, amount of transportation tax dollars available, and money spent on your project that’ll benefit only a small minority of citizens, including local arrogant special interests like bikers, is money that can’t be used to repair infrastructure, fix terrible traffic jams, etc., that really would benefit and improve the lives of the general population, and claims that it’ll do everything from creating many jobs to make everyone healthier, is typical political snake oil we’ve heard politicians and special interests use over and over.”
— Frederick, Md.

“This is for the caller from Williamsport who just put in the paper about my pay cut of $750, I’m a state employee. I’ll make a long story short. Yes, the $750 was a bonus and it did get cut this year. I don’t believe about the 2 percent raise until I get it. To make a long story short again, over the last four years I have been cut $5,000 of my pay, that I did not get. We are supposed to get steps every year, and we do not. So I’m out $5,000.”

“I’m reading the paper, Thursday, July 5, and several people are complaining about the recycling, having to pay for it, which I understand, but I’d just like to tell them that the Rescue Mission in Hagerstown will take your newspapers.”
— Washington County

“The free health care bill has passed, but not really free. I wonder how many people who are being forced to buy health care were a part of the uncovered group? I also wonder what will happen to those on Medicare, because funding for the bill is coming from Medicare as well? We already have things that are not covered; that’s why you need a second insurance. A tax can have many names, like mandate gratuity, surcharge, etc. When we are told we won’t be taxed, who falls for that anymore?”
— Hagerstown

“Only in America would we make people who want to legally become American citizens wait for years in their home countries, and pay tens of thousands of dollars for the privilege, while we discuss letting anyone who sneaks into the country illegally, just become American citizens. God bless America.”
— Hagerstown

“What a lovely picture, photograph, on page A8 of Thursday, July 5. Congratulations to Mr. Dugan. It’s a wonderful photograph.”
