Anna "Memaw" Amelia Hawthorne, 101, joined her beloved Savior on Monday, July 9, 2012, at Ravenwood Nursing Care Center.
Born Sept., 26, 1910, in Shepherdstown, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Sarah Carpenter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James; three sons, Harry of Baltimore, Md., William of Hagerstown, Md., and James of Ellicott City, Md.; and two daughters, Beatrice Crawford of Hagerstown, and Cheryl Gaughan of Woodbridge, Va.
Anna was a lifelong resident of Hagerstown. For many years, she worked at the Troy Laundry on East Washington Street, which required her to walk about four miles, from the west end of Hagerstown, each day. Having a large family and being the sole provider, she was extremely caring and resourceful in always providing family necessities during these lean years. She also worked at One Hour Martinizing Cleaners.
Anna is survived by two daughters, Gloria Keller and Gertrude Everly, both of Hagerstown; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Anna befriended everyone throughout her lifetime. She was a devoted and loving mother and grandmother, who served as the patriarch of a large and caring family. She was an excellent cook, and nothing pleased her more than cooking and the simple joy of being surrounded by her family, particularly during the holiday season. She will be sorely missed by family and friends. In short, Anna was "one of a kind."
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. Pastor Tim Fisher will officiate. Interment will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ravenwood Nursing Care Center, 1183 Luther Drive, Hagerstown, MD 21740.
