Retreat through Williamsport this weekend

Following the Battle of Gettysburg in July of 1863, the Confederate Army retreated through Williamsport.

This weekend, the Town of Williamsport and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Park Service will host the 149th anniversary of the Retreat through Williamsport.

The event kicks off Friday at 7 p.m. at Springfield Barn with the showing of videos produced by Springfield Middle School students as part of the Journey Through Hallowed Ground, Of the Student, By the Student, For the Student Program.

The student videos feature Civil War-related occurrences in and around Williamsport.

On Saturday at Springfield Barn and Cushwa Basin, there will be encampments, guest lecturers, Civil War-era music, wagon rides, re-enactments, firing demonstrations and other activities.

A bonfire at River Bottom Park and a barn dance at Springfield Barn are set for the evening.

The March to Falling Waters begins at 10 a.m. on Sunday at Cushwa Basin. The hike is limited to the first 100 participants. Reservations are required. For more information or to make a reservation, call 301-582-0813. Volunteers and re-enactors can call Scott Bragunier at 301-573-7364.

Classic car cruise-in rescheduled for Friday

Last week’s classic car cruise-in was canceled due to the hot weather. It is rescheduled for Friday, beginning at 6 p.m. on Potomac Street.

Lost in the ’50s will provide the entertainment, including a floor show.

Aerial photos will be taken. There will be door prizes and 50/50 drawing.

A donation of $3 is requested.

VBS will feature Cooper the Dog

Vacation Bible school is planned at Calvary Temple, 147 S. Conococheague St., from Monday, July 16, to Friday, July 20, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Registration begins at 6 p.m.

Theme for this year is “Adventures on Promise Island.”

Bible stories, crafts, games, “café food,” and Cooper the Dog will be featured for youth ages 4 to 18.

WHS Class of 1961 plans reunion July 21

The Williamsport High School Class of 1961 will hold its reunion Saturday, July 21, beginning at 6 p.m. at Western Sizzlin’ steak house on York Road in Halfway.

Anyone who would have been a member of the class is invited.
The class would like to make this an annual event and plan to celebrate their 70th birthdays together.
