Diabetes support group to meet

The Diabetes Support Group at Walnut Towers will meet Wednesday, July 18, at 1:30 p.m. in the eighth-floor community room.  

The program will be “Myths of Diabetes Revealed.” 

John Lipscomb, from Advanced Diabetic Solutions, will be available for diabetic shoe fittings and glucometers. 

The group is open to individuals who live at Walnut Towers and anyone in the community. It provides a forum for educating individuals with diabetes to help manage their disease and to gain support from others.

Lions club

Tuesday — Hagerstown Lions Club member Mickey Propst will discuss the club’s vision-screening program, which is in done in collaboration with other Lions clubs in Washington County. He would like to recruit some new volunteers for the fall.

Golf  tournament

The sixth annual Discovery Classic Golf Tournament is set for Friday, July 20, with an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start at Black Rock Golf Course.


Event coordinator Jim Fritsch said hole sponsors and volunteers to assist in the tournament are still needed. He said neither function requires knowledge or skill in golfing, just a willingness to serve in the fundraiser. He will have sign-up sheets on the tables at the Lions club meetings the next few weeks for those who wish to volunteer. Proceeds are divided equally between the Lions club and Discovery Station.

Bone to Be Wild

Registration is under way for the Humane Society of Washington County’s Bone to Be Wild — the Dave Alderson Memorial Motorcycle Ride, which will take place Sunday. 

Registration costs $25 in advance for riders. Registration on the day of the event will cost $30 per rider.
The ride begins at 9:30 a.m. at the humane society. The ride ends at 11 a.m. 

Riders can register by calling Ben at 301-733-2060, ext. 239, going online at or by visiting the shelter at 13011 Maugansville Road in Hagerstown.

Riders will travel through Western Maryland and end at Washington County Regional Park in Hagerstown. 

A picnic lunch will be served, and music and entertainment will be provided by Shawn Quinn of WQCM 94.3 FM.

There will be raffle prizes and an award for the top two pledge earners.
