HANCOCK — After six innings and 28 runs, Conococheague and Hancock walked off the diamond on Saturday still deadlocked in a 14-14 tie in their Maryland District 1 11-12 tournament losers’ bracket game.

Darkness forced the suspension of the game, which will be finished Sunday at 6 p.m. at Hancock. The winner will travel to Sharpsburg on Monday at 6 p.m.

Conococheague scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 9-7 lead, with Madi Renn contributing with an RBI single. Two more runs scored on an error on the same play.

Hancock tied the game at 9-9 on an RBI double by Cooper Grove and an RBI single by Eaven Gordon in the bottom of the frame.

“These kids we’ve got are a group of what I like to call gamers. They didn’t work for three weeks to give up,” said Conococheague manager Pat Taylor. “Our pitching hasn’t been what we want it to be, but the fight and guts in these kids is amazing.”

Conococheague came back with three runs in the top of the fifth, highlighted by Trevor Knode’s two-run single.

However, Hancock exploded for five runs in its at-bat. Dylan Ensor and Garrett Golden each hit RBI doubles and Grove hit a two-run double to highlight the frame. Grove led Hancock with four doubles, three RBIs and five runs scored.

“Our first game was disheartening, but tonight we showed up to play,” said Hancock manager Randy Golden. “It’s a hitting game, but right now, defense is going to win this game.”

Maddux Grove tied the game at 14 for Conococheague with a two-run single in the top of the sixth. Blake Gooden held Hancock scoreless in the bottom half to preserve the tie.

Both managers told their respective teams to be ready for today’s completion.

“We’re telling our guys to rest, hydrate, eat smart and come back with enthusiasm,” said Taylor. “We’ve got a game to win.”

“We’ve got to get plenty of rest and show up tomorrow,” said Randy Golden.
