11-12 tourney: South Mountain tops Halfway

BOONSBORO — Steven Smothers had three hits and combined with Zach Crampton and Brock Smith on a three-hitter as South Mountain defeated Halfway 13-1 in the winners’ bracket quarterfinals of the Maryland District 1 11-12 Tournament on Friday.

Cole Rinehart and Logan Saunders each had two hits for South Mountain, which finished with 12 hits total. Smith tripled and walked three times.

Trey Davis struck out eight for Halfway.

South Mountain will travel to Clear Spring on Monday at 6 p.m. for a winners’ bracket semifinal. Halfway will travel to Maugansville for a losers’ bracket game Saturday at 6 p.m.

PA Poison softball tryouts

The PA Poison travel softball organization will hold tryouts for its 2013 teams at the Kauffman (Pa.) Ruritan fields on July 26 and Aug. 1-2. Players on 10U and 12U teams will have tryouts from 5:30 to 7 p.m. each day, and players on 14U teams will have tryouts from 7 p.m. until finished.
